The SAT-S allows you to estimate the carbon and energy footprint of a digital service (that you use or provide) based on 1 year of use of the service assessed. This will help you make informed decisions about actions to improve your energy efficiency and eventually become greener in your ICT elements.
Before starting an assessment, we invite you to consider some basic elements to better define the performance characteristics delivered by the digital service (also called «functional unit») under assessment. The aim of this initial step is to define a reference unit representative of the service under assessment taking into account its use, its level of performance and a duration (set at 1 year of service usage in the tool).
The basic elements to keep in mind to define this reference unit are the following:
- What? i.e. which function(s) provided by the service is (are) considered in the scope of the assessment
- How much? i.e. what is the extent of the service assessed within the duration considered (e.g. number of users, volume of data, time of use,…)
- How long? During 1 year of use (set up by default in the SAT-S)
Example:
For instance, for ICT service providers: "providing an online streaming service for a year to about 1,000 end-users, who access the content for 2 hours a day on average"
For instance, for ICT service users: "reading online newspaper 3 hours a week for a year, from a tablet"
